I am a UVic student, enrolled in a bachelors of education program with a focus on Nuu-chah-nulth language. I have been advocating for Indigenous languages across Canada for the past seven years. This started when I saw a divide between Indigenous and Non-indigenous students in the public school system, in grade six. This division was caused by the lack of respect and knowledge of Indigenous culture and language. Through my advocation I have worked with Universities, language activists, Institutions (B.C. Friendship centres, First Nations Education Steering Committee, Etc.) and businesses to make more awareness of Indigenous languages. I also work with my brother Hjalmer Wenstob with cultural protocols in carving, mostly youth based. This has taken me on many cultural trips to engage with youth in a meaningful way. I have travel across B.C. as well as Washington, USA and as far as Germany, where I was honoured to showcase my traditional dances, songs and regalia. Through out the COVID-19 pandemic, I have also been teaching my indigenous language online, to local communities and businesses. I believe teaching and sharing my language not only strengthens others understanding, but it also makes our communities stronger.
